I received a free copy of #BabyLove: My Social Life (by Corine Dehghanpisheh) as part of this review. All opinions and writing are 100% my own.
Do you ever watch the world around you and realize how much technology has changed and how quickly? I think it every time I’m at a family gathering and family I haven’t seen in months are all gathered around in the same room staring at their smart phones. The times, they are a’changing!
I have to wonder what this world looks like through my two-year-old son’s eyes. He sees us all staring down at these electronic devices constantly. While I try to shield him from phones and other devices, he would be hard pressed not to notice them everywhere and all the time. And when it’s time to take pictures, forget about it. There’s no escaping the phone then!
The book #BabyLove: My Social Life, by Corine Dehghanpisheh, is a beautifully-illustrated take on this new world we live in where the phone reigns and social media drives us. Neither critical nor embracing of our culture’s phone addiction, it’s a simple story of the day in the life of a little boy with the phone capturing and sharing his every move. Some moments are significant, like his first roll, and some are less so, like a temper tantrum.
The book layers in some humor for parents and the depths we will go to capture anything and everything on camera, even during the less practical times. As simple as this book’s story is, the message is rather profound. We live in a strange new world, and witness much of our child’s development through the lens of a cellphone camera. For better or worse? Perhaps only time will tell.
My son absolutely loves this book. At two, he already understands the phone’s presence in our lives. While he’s too young to grasp the tongue-in-cheek social media mentions, and the absurdity of parents’ inability to put the phones down and just be present, he knows the phone is and will continue to play a part in our daily lives.
