Something Newly Sober Say That Comes Across As Judgmental

selective focus photography of woman holding red ceramic cup

One thing that bothers me is when people post they quit drinking, but “not because I had a drinking problem.” The benefits to sobriety are endless: improved sleep, decreased cancer risk, improved quality of life, more money in the bank. I can understand how anyone would desire to stop drinking whether they were drinking one…

Our Kids Need Our Empathy

a woman talking to a young girl

“I just never feel satisfied with anything” my child said and I immediately stopped what I was doing and sat on the floor next to him. “Me too, baby,” I said as I looked him straight in the eyes. “I’m the same way.” No deflecting. No pretending like I didn’t hear him. No toxic positivity….

It’s Ok to Disturb the Peace

My mom told me a story about her childhood that always stuck with me. She talks about a sleepover at a friends house where she woke up in the middle the night and had to pee. But she was so afraid of waking up anyone, she instead decided to hold it in the rest of…

When It Comes To Our Kids, Never Assume

You know what they say about the word assume, don’t you? When you assume you make an ass out of you and me. I have learned how important it is to let go of assumptions in raising kids. So many preconceived notions about who these kids would be. And they continue to show me every…

I Don’t Want My Kids To “Just Be Happy”

Perhaps it’s time to retire the “I just want my kids to be happy” narrative. Something I have learned in life is that it’s not even realistic. Nobody can be happy all the time. And even if we could, would we then understand the value of happiness? Would we appreciate it or just expect it?…

What I Want You To Know About Parenting A Child With Autism

April is Autism Awareness month and here’s what I’ve learned about having a child with autism in the year since his diagnosis. 1. He is exactly the way he was meant to be. His autism is part of his gifts. He’s sensitive, creative, curious and strong willed and it’s all exactly right. 2. The only…

If Disneyland Serves Alcohol

Does Disneyland serve alcohol? I’m pleased to tell you I wouldn’t know. I’m even prouder to tell you I don’t much care. A trip to Disneyland 5 years ago… this might’ve been my first question. What’s worse? I might not have wanted to take this trip at all if the answer was no. Not so…

Our Kids Are Listening: Part 2

photo of woman using silver laptop with her child playing on grass field

Our kids are listening. They hear you talk about what you really think about their school teacher. They know what you say about their aunt when you leave the family gathering. They know what you think about someone who looks or acts differently because they heard the way you giggled or sneered about that person…

The benefits of sobriety are endless: improved sleep, decreased cancer risk, improved quality of life, more money in the bank. I can understand how anyone would desire to stop drinking whether they were drinking one drink a week or dozens.
But when you add your reasons for sobriety specifically do not include a drinking problem, you slide a wedge between yourself and anyone who might in fact struggle with a problem. You “other” those of us who did or do see drinking as a problem.
It would be like me saying I go to the gym “but not because I have a weight problem.” So because someone else goes to the gym because of a weight problem they are somehow less? Other? Something to be ashamed of?
I think my favorite reason for sobriety is for the person who says they don’t know if they had a drinking problem. I think that’s about as honest of an answer as it gets.
But if you are in that very small percentage of people who got sober simply because you wanted to or had no desire to continue? Just say that. Don’t ‘other’ the rest of us who did in fact struggle with a drinking problem.
It hurts. It isolates. And it low-key shames. And sobriety should be about celebration, not categorization. Someone’s reason for getting sober does not classify them as better than or less than anyone else 💯

I chose alcohol over things and people for a long, I chose alcohol over things and people for a long, long time.
I will not choose it over my kids. I will not miss another moment to a fuzzy head, a nasty hangover, or a desperate overpour. Not another “just one more.” Not today, and God willing, not tomorrow either.

Moms can be grateful and still be exhausted.

Moms can value their family and still complain that it's just so hard.

Moms can be good, loving, caring parents, and still struggle with anxiety and depression.

Moms can choose to have kids and still gripe about how their kids behave.

Moms can have feelings, ALL THE FEELINGS, and should not have to worry about judgment, shame, or stigma.

Moms are allowed to have feelings. Even the uncomfortable feelings. Especially the uncomfortable ones.
