Wow, I’m in Good Morning America today… my name next to Anne Hathaway? Um, that’s kinda cool.
I want to say one thing that I don’t think is articulated well in the article. I do NOT blame mommy wine culture for my over-drinking. That is on me. I’m not a victim.
However, I used the wino mom jokes to justify my behavior. And I think a lot of us do this. I was strong enough to say “NO MORE” but what if I wasn’t? What about the moms really struggling. REALLY struggling? Do you still think the ‘mommy needs wine’ jokes is SO funny, it’s worth this? The 23 million Americans currently struggling with alcohol?
Can you imagine if the message was “Mommy needs a cigarette?” Would you be OK with that? How about “mommy need Vicodin”?
And did you know alcohol is more addictive than cigarettes? In fact, alcohol is considered the second most addictive substance, second only to heroin. TO HEROIN.
I’m not saying to put down your glass of wine. If you like wine, I won’t judge you. And if you smoke cigarettes, I dont judge you either. But if you think the ‘mommy needs wine’ jokes are still funny and not harmless after reading this — even knowing that 1 in 10 of your friends and family is struggling with alcohol dependence? Than you need to look around. This is not a harmless joke.
The joke’s over. Time to find a new joke.
