So it begins. The holiday scramble. Elves, lights, and decorations a plenty.
Christmas movies. Holiday cheer everywhere. And the rush of emails, sales and consumerism floods us and our children.
Families start to check in. What do the kids want this year? Secret santas. White elephants. Who’s doing what…
We have the lists from our kids on our phones, or stored on Amazon, or just tucked away neatly in our heads.
And yet, there’s someone who often gets overlooked on the holidays.
The invisible santa, i.e. mom.
What does mama want?
What do YOU want for the holidays, mama? And no, I’m not just talking about that Peloton you dream of but know it’s out of the budget.
I’m talking about what you really WANT. Is it to finally have the family back together again – knowing full well it can’t happen this year?
Or is it to escape for some ‘me time’ you haven’t dared dream of since the world slammed to a halt back in March?
Is it marriage counselling, the Covid vaccine for your elderly family, or just a break from the mental load of the holidays entirely? Is it to quit drinking, or for a loved one to quit?
What’s on your list this year, mama?
Even if it’s impossible. Even if it’s just a wish.
I’m asking you because often no one ever asks mama. Sometimes, mama gets forgotten in the mayhem. But on the holidays, it’s even worse.
We give the credit to some old guy named Santa and we watch in delight as our children are filled with the magic of this season. We wouldn’t change it for the world.
But it’s a lot. Let me say that again.
It’s a lot.
And this year, especially this year – I want you to know I see you. And I am praying for you, mama.
And in case no one else asks, I’m asking you now.
What do you want for the holidays this year mama?
Because maybe, just maybe, you want someone who will listen to you share your dreams. Maybe I can be that friend for you now.
And if the season is heavy for you, because it is for most of us, I want you to know: mama makes the magic happen.
We can’t do the holidays without you, mama.
